Science day fun!

This week we had some special visitors in school to do a range of exciting experiments with us.

Reverend Noel posed the question ‘Why do Lemon Sherbets taste sour?’ We conducted an experiment to find out by adding some red cabbage and hot water to a beaker to act as our indicator. First we put some acid and cabbage indicator into a test tube and the water turned pink. Next we put some alkali and cabbage indicator into a test tube and the water turned green. Then we put some lemon sherbet solution and cabbage indicator into a test tube and the water turned pink. We found out that it is the acid in food that makes it taste sour.

Mr Beechey posed the question ‘How can we launch a rocket?’ First we made a rocket out of an empty plastic bottle and fitted a cork tightly into the opening. Next we filled the bottle with baking soda and vinegar. A chemical reaction took place, carbon dioxide rose to the surface and the mixture exploded causing the rocket to take off!

Our teachers posed the question ‘Which materials dissolve in water?’ coffee - salt - sugar - sand - flour. We placed a small amount of each material in a beaker of water and stirred. If the material dissolved it is called soluble and if it didn’t dissolve it is called insoluble. We found that Coffee, salt and sugar were soluble and that sand and flour are insoluble.

Thank you so much to Mr Beechey and Reverend Noel for visiting us and leading such fantastic experiments!
